Ivy House, Marlborough
Early evening, September 1st
By the time the clock on her laptop had struck five, the last of the parents were driving out of the parking area behind Ivy and leaving their daughters behind. Some had just come back from cosy family farewell feasts in town, whilst some had to stay behind a little longer to console a few of the younger girls who were already feeling homesick.
Ellie sat on her bed with her window open, listening from her third-floor bedroom to the sounds of those coming and going down below. It was a welcome distraction from the chaotic mess of plans that she was trying to get her head around, which was proving immensely difficult despite the vast array of lists and charts that she had spent the last few hours preparing.
Weekly timetables packed with sports and club meetings in every free period, with even more sports and clubs squeezed in between them. Lists of the girls that she knew in Ivy, colour coded to signify what cliques they were in or what clubs they were a part of.
Purple for Field Hockey, blue for Football, orange for the Swim team…
These were all distractions too. Hours ago, Ellie had intended
to head downstairs and join the rest of the house in the common room, a
time to mingle and reunite with friends for a few hours before the
evening where, as was tradition, there would be a ‘Welcome Back Ivy’
party. Normally she would skip it, or quietly head off back to her room
after half an hour when nobody was looking. As with everything to do
with her school life this year, this night would be different.

After being led inside and walked through the lengthy process of signing dozens of forms, collecting their room keys and having their student I.Ds renewed, Miss Hunt gave them a thorough tour of the whole house. The Housemistress was treating the day as a fully planned out royal engagement, neglecting the fact that Will and Kate were both well used to the layout of Ivy House by now, or at least as much as they needed to be considering they weren’t the ones who would be living there for the year.

Marlborough, England
The drive back into Marlborough was always difficult on the 1st of September. Traffic would grind to a halt in the sleepy little village as students started returning to school, their parents desperate to find an empty parking space so that moving their children’s things was that much easier. The Cambridge family were no different, stuck in traffic in the middle of the high street as they waited for the roads to clear. It took them thirty minutes to travel a mile, and then another thirty sitting in a side road outside Ivy House as they waited for a parking spot to free up. Kate could still vaguely remember her own mother driving her back to school, in a time where Marlborough was less famous and the student body was still something that the small town could handle.
What days those were.

You would think that news reports would keep up with modern times, that they would consider the viewers ever decreasing attention span over the years and do their best to keep you interested. Ellie found this wasn’t the case as she sat in her bedroom watching a rebroadcast of her great grandmother’s funeral while her suitcases sat around, empty and waiting to be packed.
